Cedar Beef comes from our family farm in Cedar on Vancouver Island, in the traditional territory of our Snuneymuxw neighbours. The farm and neighbouring fields, which provide additional winter forage, sit at the edge of the Nanaimo River Estuary. All three generations of our family help on the farm, which provides us the opportunity to live close - and stay connected - to the land and the people we love. Having farmed here for over 30 years, we are determined to steward a fertile, healthy land base to sustain our beef cattle and the abundance of natural wildlife that depend on the farm's rich grasslands. Our Simmental-Red Angus cattle are born here and live in a low stress, natural environment. Calves are raised with their mothers and are free to roam lush, fertile pastures throughout the grazing season and, in winter, are supplemented with homegrown fermented grass silage. Once fully matured, individual animals are brought to a provincially licensed Class A slaughter facility nearby. The beef is traditionally dry-aged for 21 days to relax the meat and intensify the flavour before being hand cut, wrapped, and frozen to maintain freshness. A major benefit of raising our animals on pasture is that their meat is healthier. Grass-fed beef has less total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, and calories compared to conventional feedlot beef; and it has more vitamin E, beta-carotene, vitamin C, and health-promoting fats, including omega-3 fatty acids and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). This combination of genetics, grass-finishing, and dry-aging allows us to offer you a boutique beef that is highly nutritious, free of added hormones and antibiotics - and full of rich natural flavours.
